About Attribution of my Works

The question came up quite regularly in the past, what would be an appropriate way to attribute me when using one of the CC-released works. Unfortunately the Creative Commons License itself proves to be no real help here. The license text (as of version 3.0) says:

“You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work).”

So obviously it’s up to me to explain, how I want to be credited. Drum roll! I will now officially do this:

  • Usage for print (multipage): Add my name and the web address, where applicable, of the original to a dedicated section for picture credits or a reference list.
  • Print (single page): Add my name (and URL) in a small foot line. This may be skipped, if the work is used in the same fashion and context on-line, the website is the main part of the usage, and the attribution takes place there. If in doubt, ask me.
  • Web, single page: Add my name (and URL) directly under the work or via obvious footnote in the page footer.
  • Web, multiple pages: If the work is used consistantly on many pages, e.g., as part of a background image, add my name (and URL) to a dedicated “picture credits” page, alternatively to the imprint, legal notices or comparable page. This page must be reachable from every page, that uses the work.
  • Exceptions to this rules: Talk to me, I usually don’t bite. Chances are, that I allow more liberal usage of the work.

I’d love to hear from you, if you use my work, but this is not a strict requirement.

Please remember, if my work is derived from other CC-released work, you will need to attribute the other creators as well. You must find out in this case, how the respective artist/author wants this to be done. If you have any problems with this, again contact me, and I’ll try my best to help you sort it out.

And now, happy remixing!
